“To serve the City of Elkins by providing local leadership, education, governance and advocacy to preserve our historic places and revitalize our community.”
Organization Overview
The Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission has served the residents of Elkins and the city government since 1984. The EHLC provides technical assistance and identifying, certifying, and preserving historic sites in the Elkins area. The ELHC is chartered in the City Code based on Article 26a of the West Virginia State Code. The commission includes five volunteer members who are appointed by the Mayor of Elkins.
The Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission works actively to enhance and promote the heritage assets of the Elkins area. The ELHC meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the historic Darden House, located in downtown Elkins at 421 Davis Avenue. Networking with various community organizations, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and recruiting volunteers are all a part of our mission. The Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission also serves as the City of Elkins Certified Local Government (CLG) agency, helping the City of Elkins qualify for a select category of grant programs.
EHLC has been awarded several grants that brought technical assistance and national recognition for Elkins’ historic sites—including the downtown Historic District, the Davis & Elkins College Historic District, and the Wees Historic District.
